I drew this evocative landscape out of a photograph of the Jewish cemetery “Heiliger Sand” located in Worms, Germany. The oldest gravestones date back to 1058/59 and thus document the first great flourishing of the Jewish community in Worms, which can be traced back to about the year 1000.
The “Heiliger Sand” is thus the oldest Jewish cemetery preserved “in situ” in Europe.
